Elementary and middle schools will honor veterans with ceremonies this week

Lumpkin County High School has been holding a ceremony to honor local veterans for at least the last 20 years. It will do so again this year (see article, Page 2C), but Lumpkin’s middle and elementary schools have joined in the day’s celebration.

The annual Veterans Day Parade boasts two WWII veterans including Corp Ray Cox. Organized by the Lumpkin County Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee, the parade begins from Courthouse Hill Saturday, Nov. 9, 11 a.m. and winds its way around the Public Square.

High school ceremony to honor veterans

Lumpkin County High School JROTC Cadet Maj. Tatianna Lowell kicks off the annual Veterans Day Celebration in the school’s gymnasium. The ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. (not 9 a.m. as previously printed in The Nugget).

The City of Dahlonega will see a new face during its city council meetings at the start of the new year after Johnny Ariemma tallied enough votes in a tight race against opponent Tony Owens for the Post 4 seat during Tuesday’s general/special municipal election.

City Council candidates debate the issues

City council candidates Dewey Moye, Tony Owens, JoAnne Taylor, Johnny Ariemma and Ron Larson discussed and debated Dahlonega issues at Monday’s forum hosted by the Dahlonega-Lumpkin Chamber of Commerce in the Parks & Rec. meeting room. Election Day is November 5.
