Cowboys and Cowgirls from as far away as Hico, Texas and as local as Dahlonega competed this weekend during the 32nd Annual Mountain Top Rodeo at R Ranch in the Mountains. Put on by 4L and Diamond S Rodeo, Dahlonega played host to two days of roping, riding and wrangling.

Wednesday marked the end of an era in Lumpkin County athletics. After working his entire career in Lumpkin through various roles from elementary to high school, LCHS Athletic Director Nicky Jenkins finally hung up his keys for the last time.
Pictured (clockwise from top left): Margaret Simmons earned a second-team All-American honor. Kylee Smith was recognized as an All-American in all four of her seasons. Baseball player Nik Levensteins received two different All-American honors for his performance this past season. Shelby Hammontree claimed an All-American honorable mention this season.

By UNG Reports The University of North Georgia softball and baseball programs combined to have four players honored with All-American status following the team’s 2021 Spring seasons.

For the first time in program history, UNG’s Track and Field team sent athletes to compete at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track and Field Championships as Journey Gurley, Bree Hammond and Abigail Kirkland qualified for the event.
The Nighthawks let out a cheer during the team’s second game at the NCAA Division II Softball Championships in Denver, where the team beat Valdosta State 8-4 to stay alive in the tournament.

After surviving two elimination games, the University of North Georgia softball team saw their season come to a close in a 5-2 loss to No. 24 Biola Friday evening at the NCAA Division II Softball Championships in Denver.
Drew Bodney was the lone first-team representative for Lumpkin on the Region 7 AAA All-Region team. Bodney led the team in goals and will continue his soccer career at Tallulah Falls College.

Boys soccer earns five All-Region honors

The coaches of Region 7 AAA named five players from the LCHS Boys Soccer team to the All-Region team for their performance during the 2021season. Senior striker Dylan Bodney represented the Indians on the First Team while fellow senior Jonah Wade was named Second Team All-Region.
With eight goals and 12 assists in the attacking third while directing traffic from the midfield, Lumpkin’s Ashley Read was named Region 7 AAA Player of the Year after a dominant 2021 season.
