Zoning request sparks debate at city hall

There was much debate at Dahlonega City Hall last week as residents and council members discussed the future of a recently renovated home at 60 Skyline Drive. Talks revolved around a rezoning request of the property, which sits on a wedge of land just across from Lumpkin County Middle School.

Animal shelter plans cause complaints

Worries over the county’s proposed new animal shelter, and the potential for noise, declining property values and a negative environmental impact, brought concerned citizens before the Board of Commissioners during a recent work session and again at a public hearing last month.

Once again, the Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners met in a packed boardroom for a public hearing to discuss the looming land use changes that could have major implications on Lumpkin County for the foreseeable future.

Magistrate Judge Randy Pruitt died suddenly of an illness Jan. 21, leaving family and friends, and Lumpkin County, poorer for his passing. Pruitt, a native of Lumpkin County, spent his life in service to the people of his hometown as a dispatcher, deputy, sheriff and judge.

At two and a half years old, she’s easily the youngest member of the seventh grade. She’s also the furriest. However, after just one day of middle school, Baymax Sessions, a yellow lab from Salt Lake City, is already breaking new ground in Lumpkin County.
The City has approved the addition of restroom facilities to be added to the Wimpy Mill recreational area, which already includes a kayak launch, pedestrian bridge, and picnic area.

Wimpy Mill Park to get new $92K restrooms

Restrooms are on the way to Dahlonega’s newest park. The Dahlonega City council recently approved a $92,000 bid from CXT for a concrete restroom building, called the CXT Denali which will soon be installed at Wimpy Mill Park.

Firesong will take the stage Jan. 20 to benefit Jeremiah’s Place

Firesong Music and Canopy + The Roots have teamed up to benefit Jeremiah’s Place, Lumpkin County’s transitional shelter for homeless families. Thursday, Jan. 27, beginning at 7:30 p.m.

While the roundabout at Oak Grove Road near Lumpkin County High School is now fully functional to the vehicles coming to and fro down Highway 19, the project was still a major talking point during the Board of Commissioners’ last work session on Tuesday, Jan. 4.
