By Matt Aiken & Dave Williams / The Nugget & Capitol Beat --- Qualifying week has come to a close for all Lumpkin County candidates. And while several seats are on the ballot, only a few races will be contested.

The art of Bob Owens, Win Crannell, Tommye Scanlin and Hank Margeson is being featured through March 22 at the University of North Georgia’s Dahlonega campus in the Bob Owens Gallery in the Student Center. It’s part of the celebration of 50 years of visual art at the university.

Broadband in Lumpkin gets $11.8 million boost

The Development Authority of Lumpkin County and Windstream are in the process of planning where nearly $12 million will be spent to expand broadband to Lumpkin County. The federal government awarded the county $8.1 million and a state grant for $3.7 million was assigned to the Development Authority.

Post 5 of the Dahlonega City Council has been filled. On Monday, the city council voted to appoint local business owner Lance Taylor Bagley to the empty seat following a blind vote by the council members.

County balks at jail healthcare cost increase

Inmates in the Lumpkin County Detention Center could soon be seeing a change in their medical service providers within the jail as the Board of Commissioners decided to put the service up for bid during the first March work session last Tuesday.

Ten candidates apply for open City council seat

A new council member will soon be coming to the Dahlonega City Council. “The city council has gathered application forms from those willing to serve,” said Mayor JoAnne Taylor.

Former Lumpkin County judge charged with theft

Agents from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation arrived at Jim Sheppard’s home Friday afternoon with theft and conspiracy related warrants intended for the former Lumpkin County Coroner and recently resigned associate magistrate judge.

Six suspects nabbed in drug trafficking bust

A drug bust on Dublin Court resulted in six arrests and a sizable amount of seized methamphetamine, marijuana, pills and firearms last Wednesday, according to officials from the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office.
