Plans for a new Cane Branch Wastewater Treatment Plant in the 400 Corridor came into focus this month during a special joint meeting of the Lumpkin County Water & Sewer Authority and the Board of Commissioners.

The three-way race for the Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners is well underway as Matthew Cootware, Jeramy Nye and incumbent Bobby Mayfield are all vying for the District 2 seat. This week The Nugget caught up with each candidate for a round of election-related questions.

The Lumpkin County Board of Commissioners approved significant changes to the Code of Ordinances regarding hotels and motels during a sparsely-attended public hearing last week.

Eclipse prep underway at local schools

The sun and the moon will put on a rare celestial show next Monday, April 8. And it will all take place directly above the carpool lines of the Lumpkin County School System. “It’s a tricky time of the day,” said Superintendent Sharon Head with a laugh.

Matthews announced as new Lumpkin County High School principal

Lumpkin County Middle School Assistant Principal Brian Matthews has been named as the next principal of Lumpkin County High School. At Monday evening’s Board of Education meeting, an executive session was held to discuss pending resignations, terminations and transfers within the school system.
