Drug store burglary suspect is arrested

A suspected drug store burglar was caught by authorities less than 48 hours after allegedly tunneling through the back of a local pharmacy and escaping into the night with thousands of prescription pills in hand, according to officials with the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office.

The Nugget takes top honors at Georgia Press Awards

Call it a journalistic two-peat. For the second year in a row The Dahlonega Nugget took top honors at the Georgia Press Association banquet, netting first place for General Excellence while also coming away with 17 individual awards during a well-attended ceremony on Jekyll Island Friday night.

In the current state of the economy, it’s costing more to do the same job. And the local school system isn’t immune from the wide-spread increase in costs for goods and services. That was one of the major themes at last Monday’s Lumpkin County Board of Education meeting.

Local cancer rate leads to further research

A collaborative effort between the University of North Georgia and North Georgia Health Systems is set to explore possible causes of a higher-than-average rate of thyroid cancer in six counties across the northeast Georgia region, including Lumpkin.
