Officials work to salvage school experience after closure

Though it may not be a traditional ceremony, that’s one of the guarantees LCHS principal Billy Kirk and Lumpkin County superintendent of schools Dr. Rob Brown are working towards as they help students cope with the global impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lumpkin County Family Connection Executive Director Brigette Barker’s team is usually tasked with dispersing around 3,000 pounds of food to food insecure families in Lumpkin County each month. This past month, Family Connection provided over 8,000 pounds of food, including the meats in the freezer shown here.

“We’re huggers, we see our families every week and we normally greet them with a big hug, so it’s been hard to keep our distance,” Brigette Barker, Executive Director of Lumpkin County Family Connection said.

The Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office is currently closed to foot traffic as part of coronavirus precautions.
Lumpkin deputy tests positive for COVID-19

A coronavirus test that was taken as a precaution for a Lumpkin County Sheriff's Office deputy last month has reportedly come back as positive.
However that deputy has been off-duty since March 26, awaiting the results of the test, according to officials.

The race for the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office is underway as incumbent Stacy Jarrard will face former Lumpkin County deputy Jack Jones in the May 19 General Primary.

City Council concerned about crowds as virus spreads
