Mrs. Wanda Lois Thomas, age 99, of Dahlonega went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 21, 2021 while surrounded by her family.
Mrs. Thomas was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. She was born on February 2, 1922 to the late Charles Robert and Lessie Viola Christy Welch. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Haden Harman Thomas; stepmother Lilly Fay Welch; brother Leon Welch; sisters Ann Martin and Laverne Martin; sons-in-law Steve Katona, Jim Burns, and Benny Thomas. Mrs. Thomas was the oldest member of Philippi Baptist Church, having been a member for 84 years. Love and hard work inspired her to raise her beloved family. Her favorite place to visit was Hominy Valley to hear her favorite quartet, The Primitives.
Survivors include her children, who called her lovingly “Mother,” Barbara Katona, Jane Burns, both of Dahlonega, Robbie Osborne (Tony), Chatsworth, Lois Thomas, Dahlonega, and Hazel Thomas (Darcy), Maysville; sister Sara Sutton, Murrayville; sister-in-law Betty Owens, Dahlonega; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; several nieces, and nephews; and her beloved Philippi Baptist Church family.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 23, 2021 at Philippi Baptist Church. The Rev. Tony Allison, the Rev. Jason Fuller, and the Rev. Nick Rice officiated. Interment followed in the church cemetery.
