Downtown Dahlonega will be filled with trail enthusiasts when the annual Trailfest weekend returns. This year the Gold Museum will feature several new activities related to the event.
The Dahlonega Gold Museum will be offering programming events for Trailfest on September 6-8.
Trailfest celebrates Dahlonega’s role as a designated Appalachian Trail Community.
Special temporary exhibits will highlight the history of the Appalachian Trail, including the original route and the change to the southern terminus at Springer Mountain. An 18-feet long elevation map of the 79 miles of the AT in Georgia will show the highlights and points of interest along the trail. Visitors will also learn about the many types of wildlife that can be encountered while hiking the trail. Admission is $8.50 for adults and $6 for students.
A new escape room will be offered exclusively for Trailfest weekend. “Escape from Blood Mountain” challenges participants in an immersive experience that finds them lost on Blood Mountain, the highest point along the AT in Georgia. In order to escape the room, participants must solve a series of puzzles in search for the white blazes that will lead them back to trail and enable their escape. The cost for the 20 minute escape room is $5. These will be held Friday 2-4 p.m., Saturday 12-4 p.m., and Sunday 1-4.
A ranger-led presentation on the many hiking trails in Georgia will be offered on Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. upstairs in the old courtroom.
The museum is housed inside the 1836 Lumpkin County Courthouse, which is one of the oldest courthouse buildings in Georgia and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Visitors can also explore the courthouse features, including beautiful wooden chapel seats from 1889 where the movie is shown. Exhibits on the second floor are not wheelchair accessible, but our feature film is available to be viewed on the first floor.
