The Georgia Department of Natural Resources announced recently that Dahlonega native Heather Abercrombie has been selected as the Site Manager of the Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site.
Abercrombie's career with DNR began in 2005 as an Interpretive Ranger at Amicalola Falls State Park, where she worked extensively with the birds of prey and reptiles.
She became Interpretive Manager at Amicalola in 2014, and for five years oversaw interpretive programming.
Abercrombie was responsible for coordination of the annual Appalachian Trail Kick-Off, which celebrates and encourages thru-hikers leaving Amicalola on their hike to Maine.
She has also worked at the Len Foote Hike Inn, which is Georgia’s only backcountry eco-lodge.
Prior to working with DNR, Heather spent two seasons as a wildland firefighter with the US Forestry Service as a Cherokee Hotshot. In February 2019 Heather joined the Manager in Training program at Vogel State Park.
Abercrombie is a graduate of Lumpkin County High School.
She said she loves the outdoors and is excited to be joining the team at the Gold Museum. She replaces Sam McDuffie, who now serves as Tourism Director for the Dahlonega-Lumpkin Chamber & Visitors Bureau.
