The Lumpkin County Miners 13U baseball team earned itself runner-up honors when the team competed in the Titan Baseball Tournament in Commerce, Ga. on Saturday, Oct. 26.
The Miners began the tournament with a 10-3 win over the Athens B-52s in the first round of action.
Miner pitcher Camron Journigan pitched a gem of a game for Lumpkin County in the contest, earning the win. Journigan’s stellar performance on the mound was supplemented well by the late inning pitching of Adian Rogers.
Miner players Cullen Wimpy and Alejandro Narvaez both had multiple hits in the first round victory and Landen Marlow led the team with four stole bases.
The win set the stage for the Miners to battle it out with the Vipers in the second round.
The two teams fought it out in a tight battle in between the lines, but the Vipers would get the upper hand in the contest. The Vipers eked out a 6-4 win, sending the Miners into the consolation bracket where they would have to fight their way back to the championship game.
In the first round of bracket play, the Miners received a stellar performance on the mound from Narvaez and clutch hitting from Connor Greilich to defeat the Stik Squad by a final score of 2-1.
With the game tied at 1-1, Greilich connected for a RBI single to left field that scored Wimpy from third, giving the Miners a late 2-1 lead.
Greilich’s clutch hit held up as Narvaez tossed a spectacular game and refused to allow another run to the Stik Squad in the game.
The win over the Stik Squad was enough to advance the Miners to the Championship game.
Unfortunately for Lumpkin County, the Miners were unable to pull out a win in the championship game and had to settle for runner-up honors.
The Miners’ success during the Titan Baseball Tournament came in large part to their strong rotation of pitchers, including Journigan, Wimpy, Narvaez, Rogers, Andy Schmalen and Kendal Lee.
The Lumpkin County Miners 13U baseball team consists of all Lumpkin County Middle School students who are also hoping to make a positive difference on the school team this coming spring.
