The 2019 high school football season will usher in a new era for the Lumpkin County Indians.
And, that era will take the traditional smash mouth running attack of the Indians’ offense to the skies and through the air.
At least that appeared to be the message when the LCHS football team took to the gridiron at the Burial Grounds at Cottrell Field for a Purple and Gold intra-squad scrimmage during Meet the Indians Night on Friday, August 9.
“We don’t know how good we are going to be, but what we put on the field will be different this season,” said first-year LCHS head football coach Caleb Sorrells.
The Indians showed off a bevy of weapons when their first string offense took to the field and scored twice in the first half of the intra-squad scrimmage game.
Lumpkin quarterback Tucker Kirk, who was relegated to handing the ball off and making plays with his own legs last season, had the green light to utilize his arm while under center during the game. Kirk went 4-for-6 and threw a perfect pass to wide receiver Trey Wilkes for a 40+ yard touchdown in the first string’s first two possessions. Kirk also showed off his running ability with several strong quarterback keepers within the RPO (run, pass, option) offensive scheme that Sorrells has put in place this season.
The opening up of the passing game was effective and thrilled the Lumpkin County fans that came out to watch the game.
Along with Kirk’s arm, the Indians also showed off several solid running backs during the scrimmage game. BoJack Dowdy, Kevin Harkins and Drew Allison each displayed their ability to run the rock, break tackles and pick up much needed yards when they were called to do so in the game.
The mixture of the Indians’ traditional smash mouth football and their new aerial attack appeared to be a potent one.
The Indians will get one more opportunity to prepare for the 2019 high school football season when they host Towns County at the Burial Grounds at Cottrell Field for a preseason scrimmage game this Friday, August 16. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
The LCHS football team will open up the 2019 season in front of its home fans when the Indians host East Jackson  on Friday, August 23.
