The Lumpkin County high school varsity volleyball squad has put together a winning campaign as the team heads in to the final week of the regular season.
With a 14-11overall record as of press-time and a 4-4 mark in the region, the Indians have shown grit and determination against some stiff competition in 2022.
“There have been some hard earned wins and some tough losses at this point in the season,” said Head Coach Haley Dibble.
Dibble said that the concept of “intensity” has been integral to the team’s approach through this season.
“Our goal is to always take the court with the highest level of intensity and to keep up with that pace for the entirety of our matches, no matter what the score ends up being,” the coach added. “Every match we play in, that is our goal—to play up to the potential of our team, no matter who is on the other side of the court.”
The approach has helped the team go toe to toe with strong opponents such as Fannin County (18-14 overall). Last week the Lady Indians looked strong as they earned a victory 2 sets to 0 in front of the home crowd.
Lumpkin has also taken on a formidable Wesleyan team twice this season.
Although the Wolves (17-6 overall) won both matches, Dibble said the region opponent is the type that is good to take on.
“They are a very strong volleyball team, and it was good for us to compete with them and see what we need to work on,” Dibble said. “I was very impressed with our defense at the net. We had strong blocks and it helped us out tremendously with such great hitters on the other team.”
The Lady Indians also won matches recently against Gilmer, Murray County, and King’s Ridge Christian.
At press-time, Lumpkin was set to take on White County on the road on September 20 and at home on October 4.
