By James Wright / Special to The Nugget ------------- The Lumpkin County High School rifle team began their season with a match at Parkview High School on Wednesday, October 22, the match consisted of paper targets instead of the electronic targets the team is accustomed to training and competing on. These targets require slight adjustments in position between each individual target and looking through a scope to determine if sight adjustments are needed.
With Lumpkin training on paper targets prior to the match, the training paid off as they came away with the win by a score of 1108-1004.
Team Captain James “J.T.” Wright (a senior) was the top scorer in the match.
Makayla Prosser (a sophomore) finished with a new personal best in total score and senior Joey Dechant, sophomore Liam Kearney and sophomore Justice Kiefer also competed in the match.
With the availability of extra lanes, sophomore Nathan White, freshman Max Causey, and freshman Jaycob Molina were able to get experience and all scored new personal bests in total score.
The rifle team followed that win with a victory at home against North Forsyth High School on Thursday, October 30 by a score of 1130-1101.
Lumpkin improved their previous team score by 22 points in the North Forsyth match to secure the win.
Wright led the team again in scoring with a score of 292, with his score qualifying him for State. (Athletes that shoot an individual score of 292 or higher out of 300 qualify to compete at the state championship.)
Dechant shot the second highest score for Lumpkin by matching his personal best of 281.
Kearney, Kiefer, and sophomore Ivy Stowers also competed in the match. Kearney’s 279 and Kiefer’s 278 contributed to the team’s final score.
