The Lumpkin Heroes program is a group of volunteers and kids with disabilities that come together in display of heartwarming love for both each other and of baseball.
The team seemed full of pure joy and full hearts as they took to the field.
The day consisted of home runs, celebrations, and support by volunteers and athletes alike.
Head Coach Susan Burrell pointed out that the program’s success wouldn’t be possible without those who volunteer.
“I don’t think they realize without their help this wouldn’t be possible.”
The crew currently consists of 15 volunteers who dedicate their time and support to the kids.
Some of Lumpkin’s County’s standout athletes, like basketball player Kate Jackson, are among the people who dedicate their time to the program.
Burrell described what the program was all about.
“Heroes Baseball is an opportunity for individuals with disabilities to play baseball and have the joy of being on a team.”
That sums up the feeling folks get attending the games, and the program continues to see growth.
Over the last few years, the number of participants has tripled, explained Burrell.
“Our program began with about 10 players, and it has grown to over 30,” she said. “We are blessed to share the field with these amazing players.”
The Miner Team consists of William Blanford, Noah Burk, Luca Condry, Micah Duffee, Beth Gallamore, Carsten Ussery and Taylor Ussery.
The Junior Athletes consist of Brooks Bryant, Donnie Cordell, Matthew Daniel, Tristan Etris, Kasey Frady, Addie Hall, Lyndsi Jackson, Brent Jewell, Charley King, Delany Rider, Nikki Sullens, Tanner Trammell and Jaclyn Ward.
The Senior Captains consist of Ronnie Adamson, Eli Browder, Zach Byrd, Joseph Carter, Allie Comfort, Chad Fields, Garret Hanks, Whitney Hyde, Chris Johnson, Lisa Kimbro, and Fiona McElliot.
The teams meet on Wednesdays at 5 p.m. on the field behind the Senior Center and are a delight to watch and cheer on.
