Local citizens gathered to commemorate Memorial Day with a solemn event at Veterans Park.
This year’s ceremony was hosted by the Lumpkin County Veterans Affairs Committee and new Chairman Stan Kelley.
Board of Commissioners Chairman Chris Dockery was also on hand to welcome attendees with a brief explanation of the meaning of Memorial Day.
“Veterans Day is a day we recognize those that have worn the uniform and are still wearing the uniform. But today is a little bit different. Today is a day that we recognize those that gave their life while in uniform. It’s a special day. It’s a day that I’m honored to participate in,” Dockery declared.
The special guest speaker for this year’s ceremony was LTC (Ret.) J.D. Kirby.
Kirby’s speech combined gratitude for the ultimate sacrifice with a renewed call for civilian service.
“Our fallen heroes loved this country deeply, and were willing to give everything they had to protect it. And their patriotism should remind each of us here today that we’re part of something bigger than ourselves,” Kirby said.
He lamented the fact that Americans are increasingly disconnected from the military, due to the all-volunteer nature of the force and the limited scope of U.S. conflicts since Vietnam.
“If you want to honor the service members who gave their lives for our country, then be the kind of American worth dying for: love your country, support its Constitution, obey its laws and respect its flag. And be grateful for the brave men and women who gave their live for our country. Strive to live up to the ideals that they so bravely defended,” Kirby implored.
“And remember not to forget,” he concluded.
