The Christmas spirit was on full display Friday as thousands of visitors packed the downtown area to celebrate the lighting of the square.
Director of Tourism Sam McDuffie estimated at least a 25 percent increase in attendance from last year. Attendance may have been at least 14,000 he said.
Old Fashioned Christmas Committee Chair Jane O’Gorman said the event is done completely with volunteers and fundraising.
“We have amazing volunteers and we love Dahlonega,” said O’Gorman.
Everything from the large tree at the visitors center with lights and decorations to the Festival of Trees in Hancock Park and the upcoming parade on Dec. 9 is hosted by the OFC.
“We are grateful for all our sponsors and donations,” she said. “Everything goes into making the square a magical experience.”
