It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas around downtown Dahlonega, as workers and volunteers have been busy decorating the square and putting up the Christmas tree in front of the Welcome Center.
For more than a month, Dahlonega will be the scene for many family friendly activities to celebrate the arrival of the holidays.
An event like this takes more than a little preparation and organization.
Cindy Tomblin, with the Dahlonega Downtown Business Association’s Christmas committee, said they work year-round in order to be ready when the time is right.
“The Christmas committee is run by all volunteers and is fully funded by donations,” Tomblin said.
In order to prepare for the “Christmas in Dahlonega” event, the group coordinates with the Downtown Development Authority/Main Street Committee, City of Dahlonega works department, and law enforcement.
The Christmas committee also organizes other activities during this time, such as the annual 5K race, the Festival of Trees in Hancock Park, the Christmas Parade, lighting of the square, and more, Tomblin said.
She added that the organizers want visitors to think of Christmas in Dahlonega as being more than just old fashioned. The group wants the event to have the feeling of Southern charm, a small-town quaintness, or a Hallmark Christmas.
To see all the festive decorations in person, everyone is invited to attend the Lighting of the Square on Friday, November 25.
The Lighting of the Tree will take place at 6:00 p.m.
Dahlonega singer/songwriter Radford Windham will perform Christmas songs from the Visitor Center balcony to countdown to the lighting.
Of course, Santa will be in town to welcome visitors to the square on weekends through December 18. And the Christmas lights around the square will remain through January 8.
