Dahlonega is known as one of the most patriotic towns around, and there’s no better place to celebrate the birth of the nation.
And this year, there is the perfect excuse for a three-day weekend.
On Friday local residents along with folks from all around the state will fill downtown Dahlonega on Independence Day.
The town knows how to celebrate the Fourth of July in style, and this year will be no exception, as the family-friendly activities take place all day.
For those early-risers who enjoy a good workout first thing in the morning, the Firecracker 5K & fun run begins at the Visitor’s Center plaza at 7 a.m.
Automobile enthusiasts will gather from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Courthouse Hill in the parking lot of the County Administration Building for the annual Dahlonega Car Club Car Show.
This year, the 1884 Old Jail Museum will be opened by the Lumpkin County Historical Society from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteers have added new artifacts and displays. Admission to the museum is $5 for adults, while children under 12 are free.
Folks who are gathering around the Public Square at 10:45 a.m. can hear the reading of the Declaration of Independence, which will take place outside the Gold Museum.
Immediately following, the Fourth of July Patriotic Parade will begin making its way around the square 11 a.m. The annual parade is full of community groups, show cars, local clubs, and other entries and is a crowd favorite. Get their early to find a good spot for parade-watching.
This year’s July 4th festivities correspond with Dahlonega’s First Friday concert schedule. Folks will be able to enjoy a free concert in Hancock Park featuring Dock Rock Radio beginning at 6:30 p.m.
Food trucks are scheduled to serve at the concert in the park, as well as the fireworks show.
