The Blue Ridge Archaeology Guild meeting August 14 will host two speakers on very different topics.
Both are advanced graduate students in Anthropology at Georgia State University in Atlanta. Since both are fresh out of the field, they will be sharing the “latest news” from the past.
Brendan Harris will describe “Excavations at Roman Doclea, Montenegro” where he worked in an archaeology field school this summer.
The project was supported by the Balkan Heritage Foundation. The Roman site of Doclea is near the modern-day city of Podgorica, Montenegro.
Their goal was to better understand the life in Doclea during the Late Antique Period (3rd-7th centuries CE).
Harris is a Master’s degree candidate, focusing on Archaeology and Historic Preservation. His thesis will concern conservation and management of World Heritage Sites.
David Grogan’s talk is entitled “Beyond the Walls: Roman Lincoln.”
Lincoln, England, was the site of both a Roman fortress and, later, one of three colonia in Britain. In 2018 and 2019, Bishop Grosseteste University undertook excavations just north of the Roman walls of the city. Grogan participated this summer in that project.
His talk will review the findings of those excavations and their implications for our understanding of the late Roman period in Britain.
Grogan is also an Anthropology Master’s student at Georgia State. His primary research interest is the Early Medieval period in Northern and Western Europe.
The topic of his Master’s thesis is a comparative study of suburban spaces in three Early Medieval English cities—Southampton, Lincoln, and York.
The Blue Ridge Archaeology Guild (BRAG) meets on Wednesday, August 14, at 6 p.m. at the Dahlonega Parks and Recreation Building on Riley Road.
The meetings are free and open to the public, and visitors are welcome.
