When a customer pulled out a semi-automatic pistol at the counter of the Highway 60 Dollar General last Sunday evening, the on-duty cashier’s first reaction was disbelief.
“Due to the community being like it is, the lady said she at first thought, ‘Are you kidding me?'” said Sheriff Stacy Jarrard. “But no it was for real.”
It was just after 8:45 p.m. when a white man with a prominent four-leaf clover tattoo on his left arm approached the front counter with a bottle of over-the-counter medicine and a packet of chewing gum.
“He had placed an item on the counter to be bought and then he pulled the weapon and advised her to give him all the money that was in the drawer,” said Jarrard. “She complied and was not injured and he left immediately.”
Now authorities are circulating a surveillance photo of the suspect who made off with an undisclosed amount of money. And they’re hoping for some assistance from the public.
“I’m hopeful that someone will recognize him,” said Jarrard. “I’m hopeful that we can make an arrest soon and get this individual off the streets.”
Eye witnesses to the crime are scarce because the man appeared to wait until all customers had left the store before approaching the counter.
“He sort of walked around the aisles waiting,”Jarrard said.
There was also no description of a getaway car. But investigators are looking at nearby cameras in the area in hopes of catching a glimpse of the suspect's vehicle.
However, they have plenty of in-store surveillance footage of the crime.
Officials say the man is in his mid-20s to early-30s. He has a series of tattoos on his left arm including the large four-leaf clover on his bicep. At the time of the robbery he was wearing a khaki baseball hat, blue jeans and a dark colored shirt emblazoned with the words “I’m So Fly.”
Authorities are encouraging anyone with any information about the suspect to call Capt. Marcus Sewell at 706-482-2619 or Lumpkin County dispatch at 706-864-3633.
“I just hope we get some kind of help out of the picture that we have posted,” said Jarrard.
