Rumors of a homicide investigation at the University of North Georgia caused an online stir last Wednesday as a police report led some to believe that a murder had recently occurred on the Dahlonega Campus.
“We currently post information about every police incident report, from every campus, on the daily crime log,” said UNG spokesperson Sylvia Carson.
The confusion occurred when the web entry, which was logged as an incident of “criminal homicide” was screen shot, texted and sent around Facebook.
A few hours later school officials issued a clarification stating that the Office of Public Safety “received a report of an alleged sexual assault and homicide that occurred in 2017, not on a UNG campus.”
Extra emphasis was placed on the word “alleged” as it was bolded and underlined in the release.
Officials explained that since a report was made to officers on the local campus, the location was listed as “on campus.”
That was later amended in order to clear up any confusion.
“There is no immediate threat to safety for the university community,” stated the UNG release. “In accordance with Clery Act protocols, a report of the alleged incident has been included in UNG's Crime Log.”
The incident is reportedly now under investigation.
