Election day is rapidly approaching in Dahlonega as early voting wraps up.
Advance voting began on Monday, October 12, and will continue to run until Friday, October 29.
So far, the average daily total for early voting is 57, with the highest number of voters on October 28, and the lowest on October 16.
There have been 624 early voters, as of Monday, October 25.
“It’s going well since this is a special election,” said Rhonda Sheppard, the elections manager for Lumpkin County. “Usually when it’s just city elections, it’s not as busy.”
This election is a joint one between the City of Dahlonega and Lumpkin County.
On the city side, Casey Alexander, Doug Sherrill and JoAnne Taylor are facing off in the race for the mayor, while William Ryan Reagin and Tammi J. Scales are vying for the Post 3 office of the Dahlonega City Council.
Meanwhile on the county side, Tucker Greene and Mitchell Ridley are competing in the hotly contested race for Seat 1 of the Board of Commissioners.
In person advance voting takes place at the Lumpkin County Elections Office, located at 56 Short Street. Those wishing to drop off an absentee voting ballot can do so until Friday, October 29 at 5:00 p.m.
Those wanting to vote on election day will have to go to the Lumpkin County Community Center, also known as Parks & Rec, at 365 Riley Road. Election Day will be on Tuesday, November 2 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
To ensure the accuracy of voting results, testing has taken place on the voting equipment daily since September 15.
That’s all part of the plan, said Sheppard.
“Testing will continue from day to day until complete and representatives of political parties and bodies, news media, and the public shall be permitted to observe such tests,” she said in a recent posted statement.
The Nugget will offer up-to-the-minute election results online on www.thedahloneganugget.com next Tuesday evening.
