We’re dog people here at The Nugget. Most of us are also cat people. (Though for some of us, allergies get in the way.) And you could even say we’re Scottish Highland cow people. Especially this week. Because this week we’ve teamed up with local businesses to bring you Dog Days of Dahlonega. It’s part special section, part fundraiser.
And despite the name, it benefits more than just dogs. (Dog, Cat and Cow Days of Dahlonega just doesn’t have the same ring to it though.)
In this section you’ll find a series of features on the local animals who, alongside their human counterparts, make a big impact on the community.
That includes Brody, the friendly Bernedoodle at Big Creek Distillery.
There’s also Hamish and Fergus, the popular Scottish Highland cows who can be found grazing behind 52 West Brewery.
There’s also Ali, the helpful canine support dog of Jacob Merry.
And don’t forget about Pookie. The Staffordshire mix is the longest running resident at Lumpkin County Animal Shelter.
And while there are plenty of entertaining stories in this section, our favorite part happens well after it’s published.
A total of 10 percent of the ad sales from this section go to TLC Humane Society.
So that means that eventually The Nugget staff will get to show up with a truck load of food and necessities for the non-profit, no-kill shelter.
Our latest shipment included everything from dog food to chews to scratching posts to kitty litter to cleaning supplies.
And since we’re dog people, we made sure to visit with the shelter residents while we were there.
Hopefully this section will encourage some of our readers to do the same.
Because whether you’re a dog person, a cat person, a cow person or all of the above, there are plenty of four-legged friends looking for a good home in Lumpkin County.
Though, we should add, there’s probably not that many Scottish Highland cows up for adoption.
That’s just as well. Pookie will be much easier to take on a walk anyway.
