Richard “Red” Allen Hill
Richard “Red” Allen Hill, age 68, passed away Friday, March 23, 2018 suddenly from a massive heart attack in NE Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville. Ric was born in Crawford, Tennessee to Ben and Naomi Hill.
After graduating from Riviera Beach High School in Riviera Beach, Florida he enlisted into the United States Marine Corps. Ric was stationed with the 2nd Battalion/9th Marines, aka “Hell In A Helmet” and deployed to Vietnam during 1968-69. He received a purple heart medal after being wounded.
After Vietnam, Ric moved to Gainesville, Florida. He attended Santa Fe Community College where he received his AA. Eventually Ric moved to Waldo, Florida where he lived most of his life with his wife Linda Darnell Thomas Hill, and daughter, Rickie Lee Hill.
Years after Vietnam, Ric began a search to find guys he had served in combat with. With enough determination and hard work he was able to progressively gather “2/9’ers” and form what is still known as the “2/9 Network.” This brotherhood continues to meet to reconnect and share stories, experiences, and even make lifelong friends.
He retired from the University of Florida’s Agronomy Department after working for 30 years. Then he and his family settled in Dahlonega, GA where he lived for 10 years.
Ric is preceded in death by his father, Ben Hill, mother Naomi Hill, step mother June Hill, sister, Gail Barkley, twin brother, Roland Hill, grandparents R. & Lillian Hill. He is survived by his wife Linda Darnell Thomas Hill of 42 years, daughter Rickie Lee Hill Everette, son in law Beau Bruce Hill, granddaughter, Bo Scarlett Everette, brother Robert Goddard (Bonnie Guy), brother Bruce Goddard (Judy), nieces, nephews, lifelong friends, and all of his brothers in the “2/9 Network.”
Ric will be missed by all those who knew or loved him. Red was funny, humble, incredibly intelligent, and quick witted. He could always make anyone smile or laugh at his jokes.
