-STAR student and teacher shine at LCHS
Lumpkin County High School senior McKinley Johnson won recognition as this year’s STAR student because of his SAT score and placement in the top 10 percent of his class. STAR stands for Student Teacher Achievement Recognition and is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators Foundation.
Though Johnson received the award due to his academic achievement, he chose sports medicine and athletic trainer Erin Wright as his STAR teacher on the basis of her influence in his chosen career path. He wants to go into sports medicine.
He selected Wright, a certified Athletic Trainer in the CTAE ( Career, Technical and Agricultural Education) because “She has helped me the most and contributed the most to what I want to do. She’s helped me plan my career goals.”
“He’s an outstanding student—a hard worker, dedicated and has a desire to learn. I try to encourage him to go further, to became an orthopedic surgeon,” she said.
As far as favorite courses go, Johnson said, “I don’t really have a favorite. I like pretty much everything.”
