The one-vehicle wreck happened right after 11 a.m., on Ga. 400 between Nightfire Drive and Henry Grady Highway, just past the Lumpkin/Dawson line, said Director Billy Thurmond with the Dawson County Emergency Medical Services. The driver, Clayton Patterson, 69, was driving southbound on the highway when his vehicle traveled off the road and began spinning out of control.
After hitting a marker pole, the vehicle became airborne, struck the ground and flipped over several times. It finally came to a rest off the shoulder of Ga. 400.
According to the Georgia State Patrol, emergency crews at the scene believe Patterson was suffering from a medical condition that may have led to the accident, though that has not been confirmed. He was not wearing a seatbelt, the patrol said.
