Budget cuts on deck for Parks & Rec: Looking for strategies to keep full lineup of programs
Tough economic times require tough decisions regarding services that Lumpkin County residents have become accustomed to. The current tightening of the county budget can be felt at the Parks & Rec Department in particular. The department has already endured a 21 percent decrease in funds from 2008 to 2009 and is facing yet another round of cutbacks, according to Lumpkin County Manager Stan Kelley.

North Georgia Individual Basketball Camp
North Georgia College & State University Men's Basketball is offering two sessions of summer basketball camp for all players age 8-18 from June 7-10 and July 12-15. Campers may commute or stay overnight to camp. Day camp hours will be from 2:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Sunday, and 8:30 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday and 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Fees for day campers will be $225 and require a $50 non-refundable deposit that will hold your spot in camp. Really, it was just that she didn't want to take ballet. Ashley Brown, who has been playing basketball for about 12 years, happened upon a North Georgia basketball camp as a child after seeing that the alternative was taking ballet lessons. Over a decade later, she has become the Lady Indians' all-time leading scorer and has recently been named First-Team All-Region for 7-AAA.

The recent graduate has been a fixture on special-teams and defense for three seasons, and can bang the pigskin through the uprights like no one else. Now Ayres is taking a big step in his football career by signing with Valdosta State University. The Blazers are the real deal when it comes to football, owning the 2004 and 2007 NCAA Division II National Football Championships.

Lumpkin riflery star rocks on: Former local standout earns third at NCAA Championships
One year ago Mattie Brogdon was competing for one of the top high school riflery teams in the state. In 2009 the Lumpkin County High School graduate has moved up to collegiate competition. Brogdon, originally from Dawson County, is competing in her freshman year at Texas Christian University, a NCAA Division I school in Fort Worth.

13th Annual Mountain Ranger Run, Ride, and Duathlon deliver serious competition
As part of the 2009 Ranger Open House at Camp Frank D. Merrill, the Mountain Ranger Run, Mountain Bike Race and Duathlon challenged athletes to push their endurance to the limit on the trails of the Chattahoochee National Forest. The event has become a favorite with mountain bikers and trail runners, and attracts competitors from Georgia and neighboring states.

Six Gap Century turns 20 years old, 2500 riders attend party.
This Sunday Dahlonega again became the southeast's center for cycling excitement as the Dahlonega-Lumpkin County Chamber of Commerce hosted the 20th Annual Six Gap Century. Along with the accompanying Three Gap Fifty bike ride the event has grown by leaps and bounds to become the Chamber's top fundraiser. The ride now boasts approximately 2,500 registered riders each year.

Budget cuts on deck for Parks & Rec: Looking for strategies to keep full lineup of programsTough economic times require tough decisions regarding services that Lumpkin County residents have become accustomed to. The current tightening of the county budget can be felt at the Parks & Rec Department in particular.
