The Georgia Mountain Food Bank, which helps provide food to those in need in Lumpkin County through partnerships with three local service groups, will hold its 6th Annual Empty Bowl Lunch Fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept 13. For $25 guests are served a simple meal and receive a hand-made bowl as a reminder of empty bowls and stomachs in North Georgia. The NGCSU History and Philosophy Department, jointly with the Blue Ridge Archaeology Guild, will co-sponsor the Anthropology Lecture Series for September, to be held at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, in Room 202 of Young Hall. Anthropology adjunct Dr. Neil Duncan will discuss “Food and Ritual in Ancient Coastal Peru,” based on his archaeological investigations north of Lima.The team discovered very early domestic food plants in a pre-pottery temple site. The TLC Humane Society will hold the 2nd Annual Bark in the Park for pets and their owners Sunday, Sept. 30. Lumpkin County Sheriff Office is now registering bikers to join in the Annual Ride to Benefit the Georgia Sheriff’s Youth Homes to be held Saturday, Oct. 13. Cost to join the event is $25 per bike and $10 per passenger. Riders will leave from Frazier’s Harley Davidson in Buford and end at Rider’s Hill in Dahlonega. Money raised from the event goes to support the five campuses across the state where at-risk youth are provided a structured, loving environment, educational support, recreational opportunities and training in life skills. Georgia Teens Ride With P.R.I.D.E. (Parents Reducing Injuries and Driver Error) is a free, national award-winning two-hour course designed to help parents and their new (or soon to be) teen drivers, ages 14-16, learn what they need to do during the 40 hours of supervised practice driving time required by Georgia law.
