CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) and Rainbow Children’s Home are sponsoring “Home for the Holidays,” a gingerbread house competition to benefit children who are without a permanent home. School system informational meeting Nov. 28

The Lumpkin County School System will hold an informational meeting to discuss the new accountability system for Georgia schools. The new system, the College and Career Ready Performance Index, will release report cards for public schools for the first time December 2012. The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 28, at 3:30 p.m. in the board room located at 56 Indian Drive.

Town Hall meeting Thursday

Rep. Kevin Tanner, Sen. Steve Gooch and Tax Commissioner Rachel Pruitt will hold a Town Hall meeting Thursday, Nov. 29, 5:30 p.m. in the board room at the Administration Building. Pruitt will be talking about House Bill 386, the new title tax that goes into effect March 1. Tanner and Gooch will give an overview of the upcoming legislative session then turn the mic over to the public for concerns and questions. Please enter through the rear doors.

Get your picture made with a wild animal

Chestatee Wildlife Preserve will offer the public the chance to have their picture taken with one of its animals for a donation to the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office Shop with a Cop. The event takes place Saturday, Dec. 1, 10 a.m.-4 p.m. at the Dahlonega Walmart. All proceeds will benefit Shop with a Cop, the annual program that provides disadvantaged children with the opportunity to purchase Christmas gifts for themselves and their families.

SILENT AUCTION BENEFITS FAMILY CONNECTION

A silent auction Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Dec. 6-8, hosted by United Community Bank will benefit Lumpkin Family Connection. Among the items are tickets to sporting events and attractions throughout the southeast, sports memorabilia, home décor and Christmas items, and signed books. Raffle tickets for a hand-crocheted bed jacket and seasonal mugs suitable for hostess gifts are also available. Monthly Habitat surplus sale Dec. 7-8

Habitat for Humanity holds a surplus sale of home construction and remodeling supplies (including tools and decorating items) on the second weekend of each month. Winter Runderland at NGCSU Saturday

The Athletic Training Honor Society at NGCSU is hosting its first 5K run/walk, Winter Runderland, Saturday, Dec. 1, beginning at 9 a.m. (registration at 8 a.m.) on the NGCSU campus. Luminaries available for Friday ceremony

Lumpkin County Kiwanis and Key Club will hold their annual ceremony lighting the Public Square with luminaries Friday, Dec. 7 at dusk (around 6 p.m.) Luminaries to honor or in memory of a friend or loved one can be obtained for a $10 donation. For a $25 donation, a gold luminary can be had. A lighting ceremony will be held outside the Welcome Center and each dedication, along with the donor’s name, will be read as the luminary is lit. You may also fill out the “Reason” line and that too, will be read. You may also light your luminary, if you wish. Money earned from the event goes to support the needs of local children and children’s charities. Operation Christmas Spirit for soldiers

Collection sites for Socks for Seniors

Socks for Seniors is a non-profit community service project that collects, organizes, and distributes new socks to senior shut-ins and nursing home residents in communities all over the country. In Dahlonega three 6th graders, Rebecca Blackman, Zac Williams and Brook Lee are heading up the project to benefit locals. New socks in pairs or in packs, with funky colored ones for ladies, can be placed in donation boxes in the lobbies at the Lumpkin County Parks YMCA and J&J Foods until Dec. 19. On Dec. 1 the three youngsters hope to be collecting at Walmart from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Sheriffs Dept. Toys for Tots/safety check

The Georgia State Patrol is collecting toys for the Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots program. New, unwrapped toys can be dropped off at the Lumpkin County Sheriff’s Office through Dec. 20, and at the Georgia State Patrol post, 4055 County Way, Cumming, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. weekdays through Dec. 21. There will be a child safety seat check and toy drive event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 15, at Dahlonega Walmart.

CHP White christmas collections underway

The Community Helping Place White Christmas is the annual Christmas outreach which serves Lumpkin County residents in need during the holiday season. Last year CHP White Christmas served 243 households which included toys for 466 children. New, unwrapped toys and non-perishable food items can be dropped off at the CHP Food Pantry, 2030 Highway 19 North, Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. through Dec. 8. Gifts being collected for Rainbow home

Belle Avance Salon is collecting donations for the residents of Rainbow Children’s Home for Christmas from now until Friday, Dec. 21. Girls at the home for abused and neglected youngsters range in age from 12-18. Suggested items include undergarments, slippers, socks, robes, hygiene items and coats. Saturday, Dec. 1, 8:30-11:30 p.m: Tim McNary. The band McNary was formed in August 2010 when Dan Sheffield showed up for a drumming audition at Tim McNary’s Atlanta apartment. Two months later, Dan and Tim had hired a bassist and were opening up for the national singer songwriter duo The Civil Wars at The Melting Point in Athens, Ga. By March 2011, Dan and Tim had quit their day jobs and started playing music full time. In May of 2011 Elliott Phillips joined the band as drummer and Dan moved to bass.
