Ranger Open House May 5
The annual 5th Ranger Training Battalion will host an Open House at Camp Frank D. Merrill Saturday, May 5. Gates open 11 a.m. and events include weapons and equipment displays, mountaineering and snake shows, live helicopter and parachute operations and hand-to-hand combat demonstrations. BOOK/BAKE SALE AT LIBRARY May 12
The Lumpkin County Library, in partnership with the Dahlonega Woman’s Club, will hold a bake sale and book sale from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 12. Come early to stake your claim on some delicious baked goods and drinks, and then browse the book sale. All proceeds will benefit the Lumpkin County Library.

Volunteer Appreciation at Gold Museum
On Tuesday, May 15, the Dahlonega Gold Museum State Historic Site will show their appreciation to volunteers and welcome new volunteers at an informational open house from 5:30-7 p.m. Volunteers greet the public, contribute to the museum’s upkeep, and serve as ambassadors for the town. Pie contest coming, bakers needed
Lumpkin County Literacy Coalition is looking for pie bakers to enter the 5th Annual Pie Squared Competition. The popular pie baking contest/tasting will take place from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 26, at St. Luke’s Catholic Church and Hancock Park. Awards will be presented in two categories—Savory and Sweet pies. The entry fee is $5 with proceeds going to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library, which is administered locally by LCLC and which mails free books to Lumpkin children birth through 5 years. Deadline to submit entry forms for the pie competition is May 23. Tickets are also available for the festive pie tasting following the judging. Tickets are $10 for five tasting or drink coupons. The Yahoola United Cherokee Museum and Cultural Education Center, Inc. is selling engraved bricks which will become part of the permanent Cherokee Memorial walkway leading to the Museum from the parking area. The Lumpkin County Literacy Coalition and Lanier Technical College are both supporting a new Adult Literacy Program (ALP) initiative to identify and help those who want to improve reading skills. Fun and good food May 11-12 in Auraria
The Lighthouse Baptist Church of Dahlonega is holding a benefit at the Auraria Community Clubhouse Friday and Saturday, May 11 and 12, to raise funds for the youth group gospel retreat. The event starts at 7 a.m. with breakfast. Beginning at noon, hamburgers, hotdogs and barbecue sandwich plates will be served, drinks included. There will be a bake sale all day with a cake walk ($2) held at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.. Oil paintings by a local artist will be sold. and one will be given away to the 50th customer each day.
