Old Time Music program Wednesday
On Wednesday, April 18, as a complement to Dahlonega’s “Bear on the Square” mountain music festival, the Dahlonega Gold Museum will host a presentation on the history of traditional Appalachian folk music presented by local musicians John Grimm and Beverly Smith. The program begins at 5:30 p.m. with a question and answer session immediately following the lecture. Patrons are welcome to tour the Gold Museum exhibits after the presentation until 7 p.m. Gold Museum admission is $3.50-$6.
Log cabin dedication at GASC thursday
The Georgia Appalachian Studies Center at NGCSU will dedicate its newest addition—a circa 1830s log cabin—from 6-7:30 p.m. April 19. The event will include artisan demonstrations, live music, raffle prizes, Vickery House and cabin tours, refreshments, and recognition of cabin donors, volunteers and project partners. Bear on the Square LIVE AUCTION friday
Bear on the Square Mountain Festival’s Live Country Auction will take place in a large tent in Hancock Park Friday night, April 20. Silent auction and preview of items for the live auction begin at 5 p.m., and the live auction starts at 7 p.m. The work of North Georgia folk artist Billy Roper and other talented local artists and juried artists taking part in the festival, as well as donated items from local shops, restaurants and B&B’s will be up for auction. Free Tours of old jail Saturday
The 1884 Lumpkin County Jail & Museum will be open on Saturday, April 21, during Bear on the Square festival, from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. for free tours conducted by members of the Lumpkin County Historical Society. The Jail, which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985, is located on Enota Street next
to the Cannery Art Center two blocks east of Dahlonega’s Historic Public Square. The Museum displays at the Old Jail include household items that would have been used in the 1800s and early 1900s, artifacts from daily life during those times, and vintage photographs of gold mining scenes, historical buildings and significant events.
9th District Congressional Debate Monday
The Lumpkin County Republican Party will host a public debate at 7 p.m. Monday, April 23, at the Lumpkin County Parks YMCA. Congressional candidates Hunter Bicknell, Doug Collins, Roger Fitzpatrick, and Martha Zoller will be asked questions in a traditional debate format. This debate is a unique opportunity to understand the ideology under which these candidates are running. The public is invited.

The Heart of Gold Pilot Club of Lumpkin and White Counties will hold a Community Safety Day from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, April 28 at Walmart of Dahlonega. There will be a Bike Rodeo for the children (with parental supervision) and a Safety Check/Replacement of your Automobile Child Safety Seat by local law enforcement. Georgia Pick & Bow is raffling off an 18-karat gold diamond ring with exquisite filigree, handcrafted by the renowned Whitehouse Brothers, a jewelry company famous for its unique designs. The ring, which has a retail value of $4,600, was donated to the local music program for children by an anonymous donor. Raffle will help preserve McDonald house
An original oil painting of the Captain McDonald House by local artist Laura Brown is being auctioned to help preserve the historic McDonald House. The house, located in what is now Yahoola Creek Park, is the only surviving home of a Confederate Officer in North Georgia. Raffle tickets, and the painting, are available at the Dahlonega Visitors Center on the square for $5. The winning ticket will be drawn at on Labor Day.
