Rev. Curtis Woods

Rev. Curtis Woods, age 82, of Clarkesville, passed away Sunday, October 21, 2012. Born in Lumpkin County, Ga. on March 01, 1930, he was a son of the late Miles and Woodie Lee Sisk Woods. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.

Rev. Woods was the founder and former pastor of Bible Landmark Church in Cornelia where he served for 25 years. He was a pastor and an evangelist for a total of 60 years. Rev. Woods was also a retired school bus driver for Habersham County School System. He enjoyed traveling, playing his guitar, singing and spending time with his grandchildren.

Surviving are wife, Barbara Brown Woods of Clarkesville; sons and daughters-in-law, Jimmy and Phyllis Woods of Dahlonega, Jeff and LaDawn Woods of Dahlonega, Chris and Holly Woods of Clarkesville; sons, Johnny Woods of Dahlonega and Patrick Woods of Clarkesville; daughters and sons-in-law, JoAnn and Joe Labermayer of Fort Walton Beach, Fla., Anita and Shane Thacker of Sparta, Tenn., Sabrina and Gregg Moore of Clarkesville and Daisy Woods of Clarkesville; brothers, Carson Woods of Dahlonega and J.C. and Betty Wood of Blue Ridge; 17 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held October 26, 2012, at Bethesda Fellowship Church with Rev. John Graham, Rev. Ronald Hooper, Rev. Leon Thompson and Rev. Wayne Powers officiating. Interment followed in Yonah Memorial Gardens with Rev. Neal Hadaway and an online guest register is available and may be viewed at www.mcgaheegriffinandstewart.com.

Bea Gilstrap Scroggs

Mrs. Bea Gilstrap Scroggs, age 94, of Oakwood passed away Monday, October 29, 2012 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center, following an extended illness.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m., Wednesday, October 31, 2012 from the Chapel of Memorial Park South Funeral Home with interment following at Oakwood City Cemetery. The Rev. Steve Fenlon will officiate. The family will receive friends 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at Memorial Park South Funeral Home.

Mrs. Scroggs was a loving Christian wife and mother, born August 25, 1918 to the late Pete C. and Bertha Savage Gilstrap in White County. She worked at a textile mill in Atlanta during WWII and married Harry D. Scroggs on January 13, 1946, shortly after Harry returned from WWII and were blessed with three children. Mrs. Scroggs was a member of First Baptist Church of Oakwood where she was an active member for 66 years.

Bea was also preceded in death by: sons, Glen Frank (18 months) and Charles Wayne (44 years); brothers Candler (Shorty) Gilstrap, Sam Gilstrap, Earnest Gilstrap, Dillard Gilstrap, & Bill Gilstrap; and sisters, Gussie Bogan, Lucy Head, & Lillie Gooch.

Survivors include: husband of 66 years, Harry Scroggs of Oakwood; son & daughter-in-law, James L. and Barbara Scroggs of Gainesville; former daughter-in-law & husband, Brenda Scroggs & Jimmy Adams; grandchildren, Drs. Drew Robert and Lisa Valeria Scroggs Ekman, Kimberly Joy Scroggs, Jeffery Taylor and Amber Camilla Scroggs, Christopher Michael Scroggs and Jason Daniel Scroggs; great-grandchildren, Molly Elizabeth Ekman, Fischer Charles Ekman, Elisabeth Arwen Scroggs and Madison Lilly Scroggs; and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to First Baptist Church of Oakwood, P.O. Box 185, Oakwood, Georgia 30566.

Alvin Lee Marlow

Alvin Lee Marlow, age 22, of Dahlonega, died Wednesday, October 24, 2012 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville, GA following a long battle with Cystic Fibrosis.

Alvin was born in Easley, S.C. and had lived in Lumpkin County for the past three years. He was a former resident of Butts County, Ga. He was a member of Zion Baptist Church in Suches, Ga.

Alvin is survived by his wife, Becky Marlow, Dahlonega; parents, Jerry and Jackie Marlow, Dahlonega; grandmother, Lois Marlow, Monroe, Ga.; brothers, Jerry Marlow Jr. and Richard Marlow, both of Gainesville, Joshua Waits, Victor Marlow, Kendall Marlow, Erik Marlow, Michael Marlow, and Andrew Marlow, all of Dahlonega; sisters, Joni Marlow, Monroe, Ga., Stephanie Marlow, Dahlonega, Danielle Marlow, Baldwin, and Samantha Marlow, Dahlonega; nephews, James Rowe, Christopher Marlow, and Austin Waits. Numerous other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Alvin were held October 26, 2012 at Zion Baptist Church in Suches.

Rev. Tim Taylor officiated.

Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Wayne Phillip Burrell

Mr. Wayne Phillip Burrell, age 70, of Gainesville, Ga., died Wednesday, October 24, 2012, at his home following an extended illness.

Wayne was a Hayesville, N.C. native who had lived in the Gainesville area for the past 40 years. Wayne was in insurance sales for 26 years and worked with Chestatee Ford for a number of years in sales. He was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Lumpkin County. He was also a member of Stone Lodge #715 F & AM of Lula.

Wayne was the son of the late Jay and Ruth Foster Burrell and he was also preceded in death by a brother, Richard Thomas Burrell; and a sister, Eva Bell Penland.

He is survived by his wife, Mattie Burrell, Gainesville, Ga.; son and daughter-in-law, Jason and Jessica Burrell, Homer, Ga.; daughter, Stacey Green, Gainesville, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Christy and Travis Hulsey, Lula, Ga.; brother and sister-in-law, Ralph and Elwanda Burrell, Hayesville, N.C.; sister and brother-in-law, Dot and Bob Warren, Gainesville, Ga.; grandchildren, Rachel Green, Caitlyn Burrell, and Megan Burrell. A number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Wayne were held Saturday, October 27, 2012, at Antioch Baptist Church.

Rev. Clifford Allen and Rev. C.B. Martin officiated.

Interment followed in the church cemetery with Masonic graveside rites.

Zona Mae Anderson

Zona Mae Anderson, age 73, of Dahlonega, died Saturday, October 27, 2012, at the Gold City Convalescent Center in Dahlonega.

Mrs. Anderson was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County. She was retired from North Georgia College, and was a member of Hightower Baptist Church in Lumpkin County.

She was the daughter of the late Jim Grizzle and Lois Rider Grizzle and was also preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Anderson; and brothers, Ed, John Franklin, and Hubert Grizzle, grandchildren, Layla Mallard and Riley Nichole Anderson.

She is survived by daughters and sons-in-law, Catherine and Robert Brooks, Laura Jean and Terry Trammell, Billie Carol and Michael O’Connor, all of Dahlonega; sons, Kenneth Anderson, Ralph David Anderson, and James Anthony Anderson, all of Dahlonega; brothers, Herbert Grizzle, Dahlonega, Clyde Grizzle, Lula, GA, Bill, Grady, Henry, and Ernest Grizzle, all of Dahlonega; sisters, Stella Odom and Lila Spriggs, Dahlonega, Fannie Grizzle, Turnerville, and Annie Botts, Dahlonega. Nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, and a large number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Mrs. Anderson were held Tuesday, October 30, 2012 at the Banister Funeral Chapel.

Rev. Lyman Caldwell officiated.

Interment followed in Dahlonega Memorial Park Cemetery.

Carolyn Fields

Mrs. Carolyn Fields, age 67, of Dahlonega, died Friday, Oct. 26. 2012, at Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega.

Carolyn was born May 27, 1945 in Gainesville, Ga. and had lived most of her life in Lumpkin County. She loved the Lord and was an active member of Dahlonega Baptist Church until her health deteriorated.

She was the daughter of the late Robert Hughes and Morene Ladd Hughes, and is survived by her step-mother, Vernis Hughes.

Carolyn was a loving wife, mother and grandmother and is survived by her husband, J.W. Fields, Dahlonega; sons and daughters-in-law, Jeff and Jeannen Fields, Pooler, Ga., Scott and Djeneba Fields, Alpharetta, Ga.; brothers, Bud Hughes, Bobby Hughes, and Michael Hughes, all of Dahlonega; sisters, Barbara Sanford, Jackson, Ga., and Charlotte Hughes, Dahlonega; grandchildren, Jeffery Fields II, Taylor Rae Fields, Aaron Fields, and Kevin Nela Fields. A number of other relatives also survive.

She loved spending time with her family, reading, watching The Beaver and The Andy Griffith Show, and playing Canasta with her friends at the Lumpkin County Senior Center.

Funeral services for Carolyn were held Sunday, October 28, 2012 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega.

Rev. J R Fields and Rev. Paul Wade officiated.

Interment followed in the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery in Lumpkin County.
