Joseph William Palmer Jr.

Mr. Joseph William Palmer Jr., age 84, of Dahlonega, passed away Monday, January 21, 2013.

Joe was born and raised in Gainesville, Ga., and spent a number of years in Winder, Ga. He was a Corporal in the U.S. Army, and a Staff Sergeant in the U.S. Air Force. Before he became an Aircraft Mechanic for the U.S. Army National Guard, he was employed by the Center for Disease Control where he worked as a Biological Laboratory Technician. Mr. Palmer was a Master Mason, as well as a lay minister that mentored Bible study to many. He was a member of the Master Gardeners of Dahlonega and of the Methodist Faith. Joe was married for 48 years to his loving wife, Clara, and was a wonderful father to his daughters, Mary Alice and Cathy.

Joe was the son of the late Joseph W. Palmer Sr. and Emma Grindle Palmer, and was preceded in death by his son, Cary T. Palmer, and sister, Loma Palmer Taylor.

He is survived by his wife, Clara Crawford Palmer; daughters, Mary Alice Sanders, Oakwood, Ga., and Cathy Sanders, Atlanta; brother and sister-in-law, James and Kathryn Palmer; Clermont, Ga.; and nephews, Mark and Harry Palmer; grandson, Missle Technician Master Chief T. Alan Propes II, USN, his wife, Christine, and great-granddaughter, Alexandra Propes of Jacksonville, Fla.

Funeral services for Joe were held Saturday, January 26, 2013 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega.

Larry “Bud” Stephens

Mr. Larry “Bud” Stephens, age 67, of Murrayville, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2013.

A lifelong resident of Lumpkin County, Bud was a wonderful child of God, loved by many. He was a heavy equipment operator and of the Baptist Faith.

Bud was the son of the late Robert Lee “Bob” and Pauline Kanaday Stephens.

He is survived by his wife, Joyce Tow Stephens, Dahlonega; adopted son and daughter-in-law, Rev. Rick and Mary Lawing, Seneca, S.C.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Clara “Boots” and Dale Copeland, and Debra and David Weaver; nieces and nephews, Tim and Darren Copeland, Paige Ferrell, Amber Barrett, and Nicholas Weaver. Three grandchildren, several great nieces and nephews, and a number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Bud were held Monday, January 28, 2013 at Wahoo Baptist Church in Lumpkin County.

Rev. Rick Lawing and Rev. Les Fuller officiated.

Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Susie Abercrombie Edwards

Alexander Funeral Home of Cleveland, announces the death of Mrs. Susie Abercrombie Edwards, age 89, of Dahlonega. Mrs. Edwards passed away peacefully, Wednesday, January 23, 2013, surrounded by her family.

Graveside services were held Saturday, January 26th, 2013, from the Historic Mt. Gilead Baptist Church Cemetery, Dahlonega. Rev. Lyman Caldwell officiated.

Mrs. Edwards was born in Lumpkin County, March 24th, 1923, to the late Joseph Abercrombie and Dovie Anderson Abercrombie. She retired from Milliken Textiles, with 43 years of dedicated service. In addition to her late husband, Grover Lee Edwards, Mrs. Edwards is preceded in death by her brother, Joe Abercrombie, brother and sister-in-law, Purvis and Virginia Abercrombie, as well as her sister and brother-in-law, Cleatus Abercrombie Jackson and Elmer Jackson.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Brenda and Charles Chambers, Dahlonega; grandchildren, Phillip and Debbie Chambers, Hamilton, Va.; Jason and Lynn Chambers, Gainesville, Ga.; Susanna and Bill Helms, Tampa, Fla.; great-grandchildren, Chase Chambers, Brett Chambers, Kelcey Helms, Madison Chambers, Dylan Helms and Matthew Helms; brother and sister-in-law, Clarence and Faye Abercrombie, Dahlonega; sister-in-laws, Geneva Edwards Pittman, Social Circle, Ga., and Sarah Edwards, Gainesville, Ga.; brother -in-law and his wife, Earl and Betty Edwards, of Dahlonega.

Margaret DuCoff Oberhausen, age 99, of Pensacola, Florida died Thursday, January 24, 2013. Harper-Morris Memorial Chapel in Pensacola is handling arrangements. Obituary and further information will be provided later.

Tommy Davis, age 79, of Dahlonega died January 22, 2013. A funeral service was held Jan. 26 at Bearden Funeral Home Chapel. Bearden Funeral Home, Dawsonville, in charge of arrangements.
