Annie Jo Tant Turner

Resident of Dahlonega

Annie Jo Tant Turner, age 70, of Dahlonega, Ga. died Wednesday, May 28, 2014 following an extended illness.

Annie Jo had lived in Lumpkin County for 16 years after moving here from Rome, Ga. She was the manager of Dahlonega Loan Company for 15 years and was of the Baptist faith.

She was preceded in death by her parents Reuben M. Tant and Annie McDaniel Tant, two infant brothers, brother and sister-in-law James D. Tant and Aliene Franks Tant.

She is survived by her husband of 44 years, Fred Turner, Dahlonega, Ga.; sister, Patsy Marie Davis, Rome, Ga.; sister and brother-in-law, Lee Ann and Scott Simpson, Rome, Ga.; nephews, Parker and Conner Simpson; Caregivers and family, Tammy and Virgil Sisk, Camilla Anderson, Logan Reidling and Layla Anderson. A number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Annie Jo were held Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Banister Funeral Home Chapel, Dahlonega, Ga. Rev. Joel Crotzer officiated. Interment followed at Antioch Baptist Church cemetery in Lumpkin County.

Bernice Crane Forziati

Resident of Dahlonega

Bernice Crane Forziati, age 84 of Dahlonega, passed away Thursday, May 29, 2014 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

Mrs. Forziati was born December 24, 1929 in Madison County to the late Charles Frank Holcomb and Willie Nora Burroughs Holcomb. She was a former Principal for Hall County School System and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church. Mrs. Forziati was preceded in death by husbands Calvin Crane and Al Forziati, six brothers and five sisters.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Joe and Betty Crane, Aiken, S.C.; daughter and son-in-law, Connie and Chili Childers, Dahlonega; grandchildren, Madison J. Crane, Jason K. Crane, both of Aiken, S.C.; Rebecca Martin, Dahlonega; Chuck Allen, Lula; Miles Childers, Jasper; Nick Childers, Cleveland; Larami Oliver, Dahlonega; sister, Betty Helton, Cleveland; 12 great grandchildren.

Graveside services were held Saturday, May 31, 2014 at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church Cemetery. The Rev. Phillip Robinson officiated.

Penny Hector

Gloria “Penny” Hector passed away on May 19, 2014 at Morningside Assisted Living in Gainesville, Ga., after several months of declining health.

She was born in New York on September 30,1923 to Paul and Paula Fabacher, and she had one sister, Antoinette. The Fabacher family was a prominent member of the New Orleans, La. community, and owner of JAX Brewery. Penny attended Marymount School and later graduated from Pembroke/Brown University with a degree in Psychology. She married Carl Hector on November 17, 1945 and was the mother of four sons and one daughter. Over her lifetime she was a committed, energetic and loving wife and mother. She was active in community volunteerism and was an avid gardener, a skilled painter and an enthusiastic golfer.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Carl and beloved son Paul. She is survived by her children John, Donald, Kent and Carol Hector, son-in-law Terry McGee, daughters-in-law Abby Lork Hector, Joann Mazzeo and grandchildren Molly Hector, Ian and Sasha McGee.

The family will hold a small private memorial service. Her ashes will be interred alongside her husband Carl and son Paul at Arlington Memorial Park in Sandy Springs, Ga.

We extend a special thank you to Morningside, Homestead Hospice, Dr. Mini Shivprasad, and to her loving friends and caretakers for their consistent kindness, generosity and compassion.

Christy Leigh Ward Atwell

Resident of Dahlonega

Christy Leigh Ward Atwell, age 41, of Dahlonega, Ga. passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Northeast GA Medical Center in Gainesville, Ga.

She was born in Atlanta, Ga., and had been a resident of Lumpkin County for the past two years after moving here from Dawsonville, Ga. She worked as a caretaker for Bright Star Home Health. She was a beautiful and loving wife and mother that will be missed very much.

Christy is preceded in death by her father, Joseph Steve Ward.

She is survived by her husband, Lee Atwell; mother, Delores Marlene Ward, Maysville, Ga.; son, Christopher Buice and daughter, Sara Pistol Buice, Dahlonega, Ga.; sister and brother-in-law, Deanne and Tommy Hitchcock, Dawsonville, Ga.; and sister, Amanda Ward, Canton, Ga. A number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Christy were held Sunday, June 1, 2014 at the Banister Funeral Home in Dahlonega, Ga. Pastor Steve Landers officiated.

Mrs. Juanita York Jones

Formerly of Decatur

Mrs. Juanita York Jones, age 86 of Cumming passed away Friday, May 30, 2014 at her residence at The Oaks.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, June 3, 2014 at the chapel of Dahlonega Funeral Home. Reverend Mike Davis officiated.

Born in Blound, Ga. on March 22, 1928, Mrs. Jones had lived much of her life in Decatur, Ga. until the last year and a half when she moved to Cumming. She was a member of Scott Boulevard Baptist Church in Decatur and was retired from CVS Pharmacy where she served as a pharmacy clerk. She was formerly an avid bowler having won many trophies and also enjoyed fishing.

Mrs. Jones was preceded in death by her parents, Gordon Daniel and Ida Bell Cheek York, brothers; Bud and Herschel York and sisters; Ethel Collins, Pauline Wise, Blanche Powell, Rilla Green and Bertha Irby.

Surviving are her children, Ronald Allen Jones (Regina), Piedmont Ala., and Brenda Carol Brown (Dean), of Dahlonega, sister, Louise Gay of Reidsville, Ga; Brother Barney York of Baldwin Park Ca., Grandchildren; Dena Bosten (Richard) and Dylan Brown (Reanna) of Dahlonega, Jeremy Jones (Melanie) of Atlanta and Mitchell Jones of Tucker, Ga. Three great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Lonnie Franklin “Frankie” Beck

Resident of Monroe

Mr. Lonnie Franklin “Frankie” Beck, age 56, of Monroe, Ga., died Wednesday, July 9, 2014.

Frankie was born and raised in Lumpkin County and had spent the past five years in Monroe, Georgia.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Royce Beck, Sr. and Hazel Louise Mincey Beck; son, Scotty Beck; brothers, Ronnie Leon Beck, Royce Lee Beck, Jr. and special Chihuahua, Tiny Beck.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Amy Anderson, Dahlonega, Ga.; brother and sister-in-law, David and Becky Beck, Eton, Ga.; sister, Sudie Beck, Atlanta, Ga.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Brenda and Junior Evans, Dahlonega, Ga., and Adene and James Shook, Ellijay, Ga.; grandchild, Ashley Davis, Dahlonega, Ga. and a number of special nieces and nephews that were like his grandchildren also survive.

A memorial service for Frankie was held Saturday, July 12, 2014 at Banister Funeral Home Chapel, Dahlonega, Ga. Rev. Tommy Ross officiated.

Charles Albert “Charlie” Brooks

Resident of Lumpkin County

Charles Albert Brooks, age 67, of Lumpkin County, Ga., passed away July 5, 2014 at Northeast Georgia Medical Center of complications following a heart procedure.

Charlie was born in Greenville, Ind., July 26, 1946, to Oakley Charles and Betty Louretta (Burris) Brooks.

He graduated from Greenfield High School in 1964 and attended Indiana University for a short time, then entered the United States Air Force in 1965. He served one tour of duty in Vietnam and another in Okinawa, Japan, and was honorably discharged in 1976. His 100 percent service-connected disability was recognized in 2011.

He retired as a USPS Letter Carrier in 2001 and after residing in Florida for 30 years, moved to Lumpkin County in 2008.

Charlie was an avid Indiana University basketball and Tampa Bay Rays baseball fan, and his passions were woodworking, computing, travel, cooking and celebrating Christmas.

He is survived by his life partner, Gayle Brooks, of Dahlonega; children Troy James (Angela Velocci) Brooks and Lana Suan Toenjes of St Petersburg, Florida; five grandchildren: Oakley James, Vincent Michael and Alexandria Marie Brooks, and Amber Marie and Rebecca Sara Toenjes, all of St Petersburg.

A celebration of life will be held locally, and Charlie will be laid to rest with military honors later at the Florida National Veterans Administration Cemetery in Bushnell, Florida. In lieu flowers, donations may be made to the Holly Theater in Dahlonega.

Robert William Fields

Resident of Dahlonega

Mr. Robert William Fields, age 83, of Dahlonega passed away Saturday, July 12, 2014 at the Northeast Georgia Medical Center following a period of declining health.

Born in Lumpkin County, Mr. Fields had lived much of his life in the Atlanta and Marietta area before returning in 2001. He was retired from Yellow Freight Systems as dock supervisor in 1994. Mr. Fields was a United States Army Veteran and a member of Macedonia Baptist Church.

Mr. Fields was preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo and Ollie Dyer Fields and sisters, Lona Mae Turner and Louise Edge.

He is survived by his wife of sixty-two years, Louise Sutton Fields; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and David Lewis; son and daughter-in-law; Bobby and Kathy Fields, all of Dahlonega; sister and brother-in-law, Dorothy and H.B. Waters of Dawsonville and brother and sister-in-law, Rondal and Jeanette Fields of Clermont. Three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services for Mr. Fields were held Monday, July 14, 2014 in the chapel of Dahlonega Funeral Home with Rev. Phill Miller, Rev. Shane Savage and Rev. Marty Abernathy officiating. Interment followed in Macedonia Baptist Church Cemetery.

James Edward Grizzle

Resident of Dahlonega

Mr. James Edward Grizzle, age 72, of Dahlonega, Ga. passed away Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at his home following an extended illness.

James was a lifelong resident of Lumpkin County and a member of Concord Baptist Church. He retired from UPS, and started a grading and hauling business, which he had a great love for. He was loved by his family very much.

He is preceded in death by his father, Fred Grizzle; late wives, Patricia Grizzle and Cora Grizzle; and brother, Jimmy Grizzle.

James is survived by his wife, Reba Rider Grizzle; mother, Cona Belle Head Grizzle; son and daughter-in-law, Lamar and Mandy Grizzle; step-children, Michael and Megan Seabolt; brother and sister-in-law, Dean and Frances Grizzle, all of Dahlonega, Ga.; brother and sister-in-law, Rev. Donald and Merle Grizzle, Clarkesville, Ga.; brother, David Grizzle and partner, Carol Smith, Thomson, Ga.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Doris and J.L. Sutton, and Joyce and Bruce Sullens, all of Dahlonega, Ga. Six grandchildren, four great grandchildren, and a number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for James were held Thursday, July 10, 2014 at Concord Baptist Church in Lumpkin County. Rev. Donald Grizzle, Rev. Lyman Caldwell, and Rev. JR Fields officiated.

Interment will follow in the Concord Baptist Church Cemetery.

Virginia Charlene Head, age 72, of Greensboro, Ga. died Friday, July 11, 2014 following an extended illness.

Virginia was born and raised in Atlanta, Ga. and had lived the past 23 years in Greensboro, Ga. She was a homemaker and she was a member of Evangel Temple in Rex, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her parents Felton Walter Bullock and Lelia Clara Burrell.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, Richard Head; son and daughter-in-law, Ricky and Cheryl Head, Ellenwood, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Ann and Jeff Jones, Talking Rock, Ga.; brother, Richard Bullock, Newnan, Ga.; brother and sister-in-law, James and Wylene Bullock, Barnesville, Ga.; grandchildren, Bobby Jones, Amanda Brooks, David Head, Colton Jones and Camden Jones. A number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Virginia Charlene Head were held Sunday, July 13, 2014 at Concord Baptist Church, Dahlonega, Ga. Rev. Lyman Caldwell officiated. Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Ruby Dean McKinzey, age 67, of Murrayville, Ga. (Lumpkin County), passed away Thursday, July 3, 2014 at Chestatee Regional Hospital in Dahlonega, Ga. following a period of declining health.

Ruby was a native and lifelong resident of Lumpkin County, a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith.

Ruby was the daughter of the late Claude Ernest Adams and Nell Black Adams and was also preceded in death by infant sister, Claudine Adams; sisters, Edna Merck and Vernell Black; and brother, Buck Black.

Ruby is survived by her husband of 43 years, George McKinzey, Murrayville, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Dwayne Gravitt, Dahlonega, Ga.; sons and daughters-in-law, Casey and Trina Jones, Joey and Donna McKinzey, and Moses McKinzey, all of Dahlonega, Ga.; sisters, Edith Lance and Bessie English, both of Dahlonega, Ga.; brother and sister-in-law, Herbert and Larue Adams, Dahlonega, Ga.; grandchildren, Jordan Jones, Tara and Daniel Goss, Shay and Ozzie Johnson, Savannah Gravitt, Brian McKinzey, Elijah McKinzey, Renae McKinzey, and Misty York. Numerous other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Ruby were held Monday, July 7, 2014 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega, Ga. Rev. Johnny Atkins and Rev. Len Land officiated.

Interment followed in the Word of Life Pentecostal Church Cemetery in Lumpkin County.

“Smiley” Margaret Elaine Hughes Wise, age 62, of Villa Rica, Ga. died Friday, July 11, 2014.

She was born and raised in Dahlonega, Georgia and had lived the past 20 years in Villa Rica. She was a member of Blackhawk Hills Baptist Church in Mableton, Ga.

She was preceded in death by her parents Junie Hughes and Nell Yother Hughes; sister, Cora Bell Brown and brother, Kenneth Hughes.

She is survived by her husband of 31 years, John Wise; son and daughter-in-law, Tim and Laurie Singley, Temple, Ga.; daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Robert Dilbeck, Villa Rica, Ga.; brothers, Keith Hughes, Carrollton, Ga., Kenny Hughes, Douglasville, Ga.; brother and sister-in-law, Junior and Brenda Christy, Dahlonega, Ga.; sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and James, Smith, Covington, Ga., Martha and Larry Anderson, Dahlonega, Ga.; sister, Melissa Posten, Lawrenceville, Ga. Five grandchildren, one great grandchild and a number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for “Smiley” Margaret Elaine Hughes Wise are scheduled for 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2014 at Banister Funeral Home Chapel, Dahlonega, Ga. Brother Tommy Freeman will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery, Dahlonega, Ga.

The family will receive friends at Banister Funeral Home in Dahlonega on Wednesday, July 16, 2014 from 10 a.m. until time of service.
