Mary Maudell Ash

Resident of Murrayville

Mary Maudell Ash, age 102 of Murrayville, passed away Saturday, May 24, 2014 at her residence.

Mrs. Ash was born September 30, 1911 in Jackson County to the late Hugh and Easter Annie Grindle Reece. She was a homemaker and attended Mt. Zion Baptist Church # 2. Mrs. Ash was preceded in death by her husband Hyatt Ash, son Leonard Ash, grandson Bobby Bartlett and great granddaughters Tabitha Bartlett and Anna Robinson.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, J.B. and Jo Ash, Murrayville; daughter, Mary Ann Arrington, Covington; sister, Ruby Pharris, McDonough; 13 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren and 9 great-great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Monday, May 26, 2014 at Mt. Zion Baptist Church # 2. The Rev. Les Fuller and the Rev. Tim Hicks officiated. Interment followed in the Church Cemetery.

Robert Allen “Bob” Betzig

Resident of Dahlonega

Mr. Robert Allen “Bob” Betzig, age 62, of Dahlonega, Ga. died Sunday, May 25, 2014, at Chestatee Regional Hospital.

Bob had lived in Dahlonega since 1995 after moving here from Lawrenceville, Ga. He was employed at Kroger, where he worked as a chef for over eight years.

Bob was the son of the late Robert A. Betzig, Sr. and Leoar Shields Betzig.

He is survived by his companion of many years, Carol Edwards of Dahlonega, Ga. and her family, Scott and Uli Cramer, Carson and Jackson Cramer of St. Petersburg, Fla.; sisters and brother-in-law, Brenda Jenks of Covington, Ga., Patty and Chuck Higgerson of Marriero, La.; nephews and spouses, Gabe and Val Erickson and Gus and Mimi Erickson; Nieces, Ashley and Stacy Higgerson.

A memorial service for Bob is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2014 at Banister Funeral Home Chapel, Dahlonega, Ga. Rev. Roger Dunagan will officiate.

Resident of Dahlonega

Dewey Edwards Jr. (Junior Edwards), age 89, of Dahlonega, Ga. passed away Friday, May 16, 2014 following an extended illness.

Junior was a lifelong resident of Lumpkin County and a member of Hightower Baptist Church. He retired from the Burlington Pine Tree Plant in Dahlonega. He was a very loving husband, father, grandfather, and father-in-law. He was well known for his passion for music and harmonica playing on the Dahlonega town square and at the Auraria Community Center. He had many friends who loved him dearly, and he and his harmonica playing will be greatly missed.

The son of the late Dewey Edwards Sr. and Estelle Lance Garrett, Junior is also preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Lou Moss Edwards, and several brothers and sisters.

He is survived by sons and daughters-in-law, Skippy Daniel and Susan Edwards, Timmy “Bull” and Pam Edwards; daughter, Peggy Edwards Holman; daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Gary Head, all of Dahlonega, Ga.; brother and sister-in-law, Luke and Carol Garrett, Cleveland Tenn.; sister, Opal Weaver, Cumming, Ga.; grandchildren, Jeremy and Josh Edwards, Brian Duke, Candace Head Wells, Cadea Head, Zachary Edwards, and Tanesha Edwards; and great grandchildren, Dalton and Dustin Wells. A number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Junior were held Sunday, May 18, 2014 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega, Ga. Rev. Mike Owens, Rev. Ken Anderson, Rev. Lyman Caldwell, and Rev. Bo Robinson officiated. Interment followed in the Hightower Baptist Church Cemetery.

Robert Alexander Garner, Jr “Alex” born March 15, 1936 passed away on Monday, May 19. Mr. Garner lived fifteen years in Greensboro, Ga. before moving to Dahlonega in 2006.

Alex is preceded in death by his father, Robert Alexander Garner, Sr. and mother, Judith Hill Garner of Union, S.C. as well as his first wife of 42 years Betty Lane Wise Garner.

Alex is survived by his wife, Marjorie Young Garner of Dahlonega; children Robert Alexander Garner III “Trey” and wife Heidi of Holly Springs, N.C.; Elizabeth Garner Morrison and husband Russell, of Charlotte, N.C.; grandchildren Robert Alexander Garner, IV (Lindsay), Jonathan Francis Garner, Kristin Marie Garner, Laura Kate Garner, Davis Richard Morrison, and Austin Lane Morrison.

Alex was a graduate of The University of South Carolina where he studied Electrical Engineering. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a Corporate Executive for Honeywell. Alex was an active member of St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church in Dahlonega where he served on the vestry. Mr. Garner was also a member of TERMITES, a men’s woodworking group and MOBS, a men’s bible study group while in Dahlonega. Alex was a loving husband, father, grandfather and loyal friend. His laughter, positive encouragement, and selfless spirit will be missed by all.

Memorial services were held Friday May 23rd, at St. Elizabeth’s Episcopal Church in Dahlonega.

James Grant Powell

Resident of Murrayville

James Grant Powell of Murrayville, Ga., went to be with his Lord May 19, 2014 after a lengthy battle with cancer.

He was born in Oak Harbor, Washington on June 24, 1967, son of Richard and Nan Powell.

He will be missed by his brothers Rick and Doug and sister Julie, four children, Kelynn (Lee) McPeak, Grant, Morgan and Hannah and loving aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was a devoted son and brother and a dedicated, hardworking father to his children. While living in the Gainesville area, he was employed by Kubota and most recently Shintone who faithfully supported him through his entire illness. The joy of his life was serving his Lord, fellowshipping with his church and enjoying friendships all over the country.

A memorial service is to be held Thursday June 5, 2014 at 3 p.m. at Banister Funeral Home in Dahlonega, Ga.

Dewey Rider

Resident of Dahlonega

Dewey Rider was a local business man, a devoted husband, a loving father. Dewey started a milk business back in 1960 where he delivered milk door-to-door and to local stores for years. Later he and his daughter Maxine ran a tire company just off the square in Dahlonega. In his retired years, he enjoyed the simple quiet life of family and friends, spending time with his lifelong friend Howard Wilkins, and his loving wife of almost 70 years, Pauline Rider. As his health declined he devoted his time to his children and grandchildren. The world’s greatest father, husband and grandfather.....Lumpkin County has truly lost a great man.

Dewey served his country in the United States Navy and was of the Baptist Faith.

He was the son of the late Crawford and Susie Stone Rider, and was also preceded in death by his wife, Pauline Rider; brothers, Arthur Stone, Walter Rider, Leonard Rider, and James Rider; and great granddaughter, Anakalia Seabolt.

Dewey is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Ed and Jean Rider, Murrayville, Ga.; daughter, Maxine Rider; daughter and son-in-law, Reba and James Grizzle, all of Dahlonega, Ga.; grandchildren, Sheri Miller, Mike Seabolt, and Megan Seabolt; and great grandchildren, Leah Seabolt and Canaan Miller. Many lifelong friends and a number of other relatives also survive.

Funeral services for Dewey were held Friday, May 23, 2014 at the Banister Funeral Home Chapel in Dahlonega. Rev. Lyman Caldwell and Rev. JR Fields officiated. Interment followed in the Dahlonega Memorial Park Cemetery.
