The Lumpkin County Elections & Voters Registration Office is definitely living up to its lengthy name this week as both early voting and election qualifying are currently underway at the downtown facility.
Early voting in the Presidential Preference Primary has currently seen a reported 1,258 local ballots cast as of Monday at the 56 Short Street building.
This will continue for the rest of the week (March 6-8) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The official voting day will take place next Tuesday, March 12 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Lumpkin County Parks & Rec on Riley Road.
At the same time, election qualifying has officially begun for those looking to put their own name on the ballot in numerous local races.
Candidates can make it official at the Short Street office today (March 6) and tomorrow from 8 a.m to 5 p.m. or from 8 a.m. to noon on Friday, March 8.
“Democratic, Independent, and Nonpartisan Candidates will qualify with the Election Supervisor,” states an elections office notice. “Republican Candidates will qualify with the Republican Party.”
A wide range of offices will be open for election this year including Sheriff, Coroner, County Chair, County Commissioner (Districts 1 & 2), Clerk of Superior Court, County Surveyor and Tax Commissioner.
On the non-partisan side, qualifying is open for the Board of Education (Districts 1 & 3), Chief Magistrate Judge and Judge of Probate Court.
