DUELING DISCERS
Yahoola Creek Park has become a destination for Disc Golf enthusiasts during the past several years.
Last Saturday, it became a sanctioned PDGA (Professional Disc Golf Association) tournament course for the first time.
Tournament co-director Jarrad Self said they have always known what a great course Yahoola was.
"But being able to share this experience with so many other Disc Golf players was special," he said.
Players competed on a par-58 (19 hole) course. The tournament included two rounds.
"We really wanted to make it a special event," Self said. "We did our best to get everyone excited about the tournament by giving away prizes and keeping an open communication with the players."
The tournament included 76 players (the cap set by organizers), with five divisions, (Advanced, Intermediate, and recreational), one ages 50+, and a ladies only division.
In the Advanced category Harrison Spikes of Dahlonega and Phillipe Jennings of Cumming both shot 17-under-par. Spikes took the victory after one playoff hole.
In the Advanced women's category, Courtney Young of Demorest earned the victory with a 2 over par score in the event. Conley Tolbert of Athens was 2nd with a score of 11-over-par.
For the Masters 50+ category Keith Tingley of Gainesville won with a score of 7-under-par. James Guy of Dahlonega won 2nd with an even-par score.
In the Intermediate category Andrew Thorne of Toccoa won with a 20-under-par, while Trey Green of Murrayville was 2nd with a score of 15-under-par).
In the Recreational category Justin Sexton of Dahlonega shot a 15-under-par to win. Benjamin Davies of Cumming shot an 8-under-par to earn second place.
Self said that considering all the kind words from the players, he believes they would get a pretty big turnout at the next event.
"All in all I would say that it was a huge success," Self said. "And we look forward to trying another Gold Discers tournament in the future."
