North Georgia soccer and cross country in action last weekend
By David Beall
The University of Alabama in Huntsville was host to North Georgia athletics in two different sports this past weekend.
Head women's soccer coach, Chris Adams took his undefeated squad over to face UAH on Friday afternoon, and head cross-country coach Amanda Harris' teams competed in the Fleet Feet Invitational hosted by UAH Saturday morning.
The Lady Saints soccer team looked untouchable heading into Friday's game, having won four in a row, and not allowing a goal all season.
Heading into the hostile environment at UAH proved too much for North Georgia though as they allowed two second half goals to fall for the first time this season. English allowed the first two goals of her career in the loss.
After a tough loss on the soccer field, the cross country got right back on the bus and headed over to Sharon Johnston Park to preview the course they would race the next morning.
The next morning came early enough, as the athletes found themselves heading out of the hotel around 6:30 a.m.
The men's team ran first and covered the 8k course as they faced tough competition including many NCAA division I opponents.
North Georgia finished in the top ten for the second straight week as they took 8th place with 232 points with an average time of 30:43.
Alan Schmitz led the way with his highest finish of the season in 23rd position as he posted a season best 28:37.
“Alan did a really good job going out and setting the pace this week,” Harris said. “He really set the tone for the rest of the team.”
Teale Marchette came in second for the Saints in 42nd position in a time of 29:25, and Dustin LaBarge continued to get faster, finishing 52nd overall and posting a time of 31:14.
Seniors David Beall and Tommy Stapleton rounded out the top five for North Georgia as they finished in 55th and 60th positions with times of 31:42 and 32:35 respectively.
The Lady Saints followed the men with their 5k race and finished 11th overall with 269 points while averaging a time of 22:55.
Emmy Lawalin led North Georgia for her second straight week, coming in 31st overall in a time of 21:30.
“Emmy's race was very consistent which comes from her experience as a racer,” Harris said. “Her splits helped lead the team to a faster overall race.”
Tiffany Rives took second on the team in 44th place with a time of 22:04. Bea Nelligan crossed the line third on the team with a time of 22:55 and Savannah Bryce followed with a time of 23:49. Loren Blake rounded out the top five for the Lady Saints with a time of 24:13.
The cross country teams will get another shot at Sharon Johnston Park against the best teams in nation as the NCAA South Regional will be held in Huntsville on November 3.
Both teams will head right back out on the course this weekend as they travel to nearby Georgia State University to race on Saturday, September 15. The Saints start at 9 a.m. followed by the women at 10 a.m. in Atlanta.
On the men's side of the soccer program, North Georgia won its first two games of the year after starting 0-2-1.
Last Wednesday, the Saints defeated Queens University of Charlotte 1-0, behind a goal from Philip Chittaro.
On Sunday, Chittaro added another en route to leading North Georgia to a 3-0 victory over Florida Tech, evening the Saints' record at 2-2-1.
