Some of the best softball players in the nation made their way to Dahlonega this past weekend for the third annual Challenge in the Mountains Tournament.
The North Georgia softball complex and Yahoola Creek Park were the venues for the weekend. The event featured 12 travel teams where more than 10 NCAA Division I schools were represented as well as many Division I recruits.
The weekend was cut short though as heavy rain on Saturday night cancelled the tournament just as bracket play was getting under way.
The teams were split into 4 pools for play on Friday and Saturday, then placed into a bracket that was left blank thanks to inclement weather.
Former North Georgia player and current Georgia Tech third baseman Brittany Barnes played for the 23/under Georgia Fire team.
The 21 year old played two seasons under Saints head coach Mike Davenport before transferring to play for the Yellow Jackets.
Barnes turned in a career year in 2007 as she came close to setting several ACC offensive records.
She belted 20 home runs, third most in ACC history, and drove in 73 runs, which is also second best in the history of the league.
The Saints softball program was also well represented as 6 members from last year's team competed in the event. Five of Davenport's recruits were also on the field showing their skills.
Future Saints infielder Tiffany Blackburn made her presence felt on Friday afternoon with a double to right-center to a plate a run and give her team a 3-2, a lead they would never relinquish in a 4-2 win.
Ansley Anderson, another future Saint joined her soon to be teammate in making an impact in the win as she tossed a complete game in the victory.
Anderson comes to North Georgia from North Forsyth High School where she was named First Team All-Region, and First-Team Forsyth County.
Hopefully the talent shown by Davenport's recruiting class will carry over to the fall and next spring, as the Saints take on the Peach Belt's best.
