Introducing new sports writer at The Nugget

By Stephen Fairbanks
Published: Wednesday, June 6, 2007 9:32 AM EDT
I am writing this week to let our readers know about a few changes at The Nugget this summer.

As most of you know, I am a student at North Georgia College & State University.

An opportunity has arisen for me to participate in a study abroad program for language skills, and I will be heading to Quebec City, in Canada, to study French among native speakers.

I will be taking a seven-week sabbatical from the paper to pursue this opportunity, beginning the final week of June and running through the second week of August.

During that interim, the sports writing duties will be handled by David Beall, a student at NGCSU himself, who has extensive experience in sports journalism, and who for the past couple of years has worked as an assistant sports information director at the university.

David and I will be working together from now until my departure, so you may see either of us at June sporting events in Lumpkin County.

For those of you who would like to contact the sports department, you may still use my email, sfairbanks@thedahloneganugget.com, until the end of June, at which point you may contact David directly.

Now I would like to give David a chance to introduce himself to the community.

By David Beall

It is a pleasure for me to come on board and join the sports team for the Dahlonega Nugget. Writing for a newspaper is new to me, but I look forward to starting my journalism career in this town and serving each reader the best I can.

During my senior year in high school in May 2004 I was fortunate enough to land an internship with Atlanta based Sports Radio 680 The Fan (ESPN Radio).

I started out helping produce Atlanta's most popular afternoon talk show “The Buck and Kincade Show”, but before long I found myself on the sidelines of the biggest ACC and SEC football games and sitting down for interviews with Braves players in the locker room at Turner Field.

The experience I gained from this opportunity made it clear that I wanted to pursue a career in sports broadcasting or journalism.

I enrolled in North Georgia College & State University in the fall of 2004 and started toward my degree in Business Management.

My first three years at North Georgia I worked in the sports information office and took on responsibilities that included maintaining the website, keeping stats at sporting events, announcing soccer games, and writing press releases.

In 2006 I also started an online newsletter called “Saints Insider” that gave weekly updates on the Saints sports teams and included exclusive interviews with players and coaches.

This August I will begin my senior year at North Georgia, and my third year as a member of Saints Cross-Country team. As captain of the team in 2006 I helped lead the squad to a third place finish at the Peach Belt Conference Championships.

The past two years I have been selected to the Peach Belt Honor Roll for my achievement in the classroom. I take pride in doing well in academics while I compete at the NCAA level.

Over the next several months I hope to meet many readers of this paper and hear your concerns and comments to help serve you to the best of my ability. I have lofty goals for my career, and I am excited to start by covering sports in Dahlonega and Lumpkin County.

The following are comments from the readers. In no way do they represent the view of thedahloneganugget.com.

Posting guidelines--Everyone knows that The Nugget readers are the friendliest people in the world. However, the introduction of the "Comments" option can sometimes lead to online exchanges that can best be described as "less than friendly." The Nugget will not edit what someone writes for the Web, but we will deny a comment from being posted if it isn't appropriate. Profanity, of course, will not be allowed. Personal attacks will not be allowed either.
For example, if Mr. Fill-in-the-Blank says something you don't agree with, don't tell the world that Mr. Fill-in-the-Blank is a no good dirty scoundrel who cuts off people in traffic and has owed you $20 since 1997. The Nugget asks you to please just stick to the issues at hand. That way we'll keep the debate lively, without getting personal. And remember, above all else, keep it civil and directed at the topic that's being discussed. We encourage your feedback and dialog, all comments will be reviewed by our Web staff before appearing on the Web site.
